What is a dynamic cone penetrometer test?
Dynamic cone penetrometer, or DCP, testing is a field technique that records resistance as a cone is driven into the ground. Depending on the context, the observations can help identify changes in subsurface resistance and contribute to a project-specific geotechnical interpretation.
DCP testing should be considered together with site observations, subsurface materials, other field information and the proposed development. A blow count by itself is not a complete foundation design or a substitute for engineering judgement.
When DCP testing may be relevant
DCP observations may help investigate shallow ground variability, relative penetration resistance, potential founding conditions or selected construction-stage questions where the method is suitable. The practical value depends on soil type, depth and the specific engineering assessment.
Coarse gravel, obstructions, fill, hard layers and refusal can limit interpretation. Results should not automatically be treated as laboratory data or as proof that the same conditions extend across the entire property.
