When this service is useful

The right scope depends on your development, site access, ground conditions and the information needed by your project team. This service is commonly used for:

  • Temporary soil or rock cuts
  • Basement and boundary excavations
  • Excavations near buildings, roads or services
  • Sites with fill, seepage, weathered rock or variable ground

Temporary and permanent excavation ground assessment

Excavation stability depends on material strength, defects, groundwater, geometry, surcharge, duration and exposure to weather. A generic safe batter angle cannot be assigned without considering these factors.

The assessment should align with the construction sequence and the relevant temporary-works or structural design responsibilities.

Important project and ground considerations

  • Cut height, inclination and duration
  • Soil, rock defects, fill and seepage
  • Surcharge and nearby assets
  • Support, drainage, monitoring and construction sequence

What the assessment can include

  • Review of survey, excavation geometry, loads and construction sequence
  • Site inspection and subsurface investigation where required
  • Assessment of soil, rock, groundwater and nearby assets
  • Stability analysis proportionate to the risk and available information
  • Recommendations for battering, support, drainage, monitoring and verification

What you receive

  • Interpreted excavation ground model
  • Assessment assumptions and credible failure mechanisms
  • Temporary or permanent ground-support recommendations within scope
  • Construction controls, inspections and further-work triggers

What to provide for your quotation

The clearest quote starts with enough information to understand your actual project, site constraints and required deliverables.

  • Survey and excavation sections
  • Shoring or temporary-works concept
  • Nearby structures, services and surcharge loads
  • Programme and previous ground reports

Excavation Stability Assessments across Sydney and NSW

Assessments are available for suitable excavation projects across Sydney, the Blue Mountains and Wollongong/Illawarra. Ground conditions and approval requirements must always be considered site by site.

Frequently asked

Excavation Stability Assessments questions

Does every excavation require numerical modelling?+

No. The assessment method depends on geometry, material, groundwater, nearby assets and consequences. Modelling is used where it materially assists the assessment.

Can an unsupported cut be assessed?+

Yes, but a safe unsupported geometry cannot be assumed from soil description alone. Duration, surcharge, weather, seepage, defects and construction controls must be considered.

Does the report replace temporary-works design?+

No. The agreed geotechnical scope informs the relevant temporary-works or structural designer and must be used with project drawings and construction controls.

What information is required?+

Provide the survey, excavation plan and sections, depth, offsets to boundaries and structures, surcharge loads, programme, shoring concept and available reports.

Can you assess an excavation already under construction?+

Potentially, subject to safe access and urgency. Unplanned excavation or signs of movement may require immediate site controls before a formal assessment proceeds.
